The Average White Band are widely regarded as one of the best soul and funk bands and still fill dancefloors with hits like Let’s Go Round Again, Cut The Cake and Pick Up The Pieces. Their original success was due to their consistently accomplished songwriting, stretching across several gold-selling albums and multi-Grammy nominations for the legendary Atlantic Records.
The six-piece took the influences of their R&B heroes (Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Donny Hathaway and others) and developed their own ‘authentic’ sound, which was eagerly adopted by black audiences in the US and elsewhere. In fact, the band was so highly regarded by the cream of US funk and soul in the seventies that James Brown released a song in dedication to their 1975 mega-hit Pick Up The Pieces, called Pick Up The Pieces One By One, under the name AABB (Above Average Black Band).

Some of their other album tracks, like Schoolboy Crush and Person To Person became much sampled and turn-tabled ”rare’ grooves. Other tunes, such as Cloudy, A Love Of Your Own and Nothing You Can Do stand alongside some of the finest soul album tracks ever recorded.

The current line-up of the band, with noted US musicians alongside founding members Alan Gorrie and Onnie McIntyre, continues to delight audiences and critics alike, with their musical energy and trademark sound staying remarkably true to the originals. No surprise that the Average White Band is popular across several generations, and a perennial fixture with many top music venues.

What people say
“We can safely say that UK soul and funk royalty was in the house.” Elfyn Griffith, B24/7, November 15, 2017

“As Average White Band left the stage with two and a half thousand people on their feet, it felt more like the end of the final headline set at Glastonbury than an evening in the Royal Festival Hall.” Dan Bergsegel, London Jazz News

“A fantastic show, there was nothing average about this one.” Dan Bergsagel, London Jazz News

“There is something very satisfying about going to see a band whose quality of musicianship is just as high, if not higher, than when they were at their peak decades ago.” Catherine Eade, The Argus, November 15, 2017
How lucky are we to welcome back City Funk Orchestra (CFO) to the Hampton Pool Summer Concerts on 14 July? Get ready to party with family and friends.

This popular dance band always features two of Britain’s most highly acclaimed soul singers, combined with some of the most exciting and accomplished funk and soul musicians in the UK. At Hampton Pool, we’ll enjoy the incredible vocals of Noel McCalla and Special Guest as City Funk Orchestra delivers an irresistible get-up-and-dance live performance.
City Funk Orchestra
If you admire the great songs of Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan and Michael Jackson, as well as Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Sister Sledge, Alexander O’Neal, Stevie Wonder, Maze and more, then you shouldn’t miss City Funk Orchestra. This popular dance band will perform hits from a golden era of music. From pumping dance-floor specialities to the smoothest of romantic soul ballads. It’s going to be a memorable Saturday night out.

Noel McCalla
Noel McCalla has worked extensively across the British music scene. He describes his genre as “soul, jazz and acoustic songs with a touch of blues, reggae and rock”, so he’s more than qualified to front the dance-til-you-drop City Funk Orchestra.

McCalla’s musical career kicked off with the Black and White Notes, who eventually supported The Shadows. He then joined the legendary pub-rock soul band, Moon and was a guest frontman with highly regarded jazz-rock outfits Morrissey-Mullen and Mezzoforte. He was also a main vocalist with Manfred Mann’s Earth Band for 18 years.

“...he’s absolutely astonishing and has a genuinely soulful intensity.” Steve Jenner, musicriot.co.uk
